WhatsApp’s own rule is short: use the full phone number in international format and omit any zeroes, brackets or dashes. The help page shows https://wa.me/+001-(XXX)XXXXXXX as the form to avoid. For an Indian mobile the result looks like this:

• Number only: https://wa.me/919876543210 opens an empty chat.
• Number and message: https://wa.me/919876543210?text=Hi%2C%20I%20saw%20your%20ad opens the chat with “Hi, I saw your ad” typed in.
• Message only: https://wa.me/?text= followed by the message lets the person pick whom to send it to. The generator above always asks for a number, because a sales link should reach you.

The message part must be URL-encoded: a space becomes %20, a comma %2C, and each Hindi or emoji character becomes a longer code. That is why a long message makes a long link and a denser QR code. Keep it to one or two lines.

• The number must be on WhatsApp. A link to a number without an active WhatsApp account will not open a chat.
• The customer still taps send. A pre-filled message is a draft. Nothing is sent until the person sends it.
• Very long messages do not fit a QR code. The tool tells you when the text is too long; shorten it or share the link.
• No tracking. A plain wa.me link does not count clicks or scans. Use a different message per place if you need to know where chats come from.
