A power dialer is calling software that removes the gap between calls without ever ringing more people than there are callers. When a call ends and the caller has saved the outcome, the dialer immediately dials the next number on the list. One person, one live call, no hand dialling. The term comes from call centres, where it sits between the preview dialer, which waits for the agent to choose, and the predictive dialer, which dials several numbers per agent and connects whoever answers. Power dialing is also called progressive dialing. In India, a power dialer most often runs on a salesperson’s own phone and SIM rather than a VoIP line, and TRAI’s 2018 regulations already count equipment that dials a stored list and “connects the call to a live person” as an auto dialer call. Weo Dialer’s auto dialer is a mobile power dialer: it calls a list one by one from the phone’s SIM, with a gap you set, a ring limit and automatic redials.
Power dialer meaning
| Term | What it means | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|
| Power dialer | Dials the next number as soon as the caller is free; one call per caller | Sales teams working their own lead lists |
| Progressive dialer | Another name for a power dialer | Call centre software menus |
| Preview dialer | Shows the lead first and waits for the caller to start the call | High-value accounts that need preparation |
| Predictive dialer | Dials several numbers per agent and connects whoever answers first | Large call centres with many agents |
| Parallel dialer | Rings several numbers at once for one caller | Outbound teams chasing a higher call connect rate |
| Auto dialer call | In TRAI’s 2018 definition, a call started automatically to a stored list that then plays a message or connects a live person | Indian telecom regulations |
| Robo call | In TRAI’s definition, a call using an artificial or pre-recorded voice with no human on the calling side | Indian telecom regulations |
| Abandoned call | A call answered by the customer that the sender never connects to a live agent | Predictive dialer reports, TRAI rules |
| A2P call | In TRAI’s 2026 amendment, a call started by an application without direct human dialling, including autodialling | Indian telecom regulations from late 2026 |
Power dialer on a mobile phone
On a phone, power dialing works with the SIM already in the handset. Weo Dialer’s version runs like this (every setting is listed on the auto dialer app page):
- Choose a list: filtered leads, an imported file, numbers from the call log, the leads assigned to you, or today’s due follow-ups.
- Start the session. The first number rings, and the lead’s name, status and last remark appear on the call screen.
- Finish the call. The after-call sheet saves status, remark and next follow-up in two taps.
- Wait the gap. The next call starts after the number of seconds you set; an admin can lock this gap for the whole team.
- Handle no-answers. A ring limit ends unanswered calls, and redial rules call those numbers again 1 to 3 times, at the end of the list, after a set time or straight away.
- Stay in control. Skip, pause or stop the session from any screen, with progress shown throughout.
A minimum call length decides when a lead counts as done, so a two-second connection does not close a lead by accident. Callers outgrowing a basic bulk-calling app are often after this record of each call more than a faster dial.
Power dialer rules in India
TRAI’s regulations describe dialers in their own terms. The 2018 definition of an auto dialer call covers equipment that dials stored numbers and then either plays a recorded message or connects the call to a live person, so a power dialer falls inside it even though a person talks on every call. Since the 2025 amendment, every sender must tell its telecom operator in writing, in advance, that it uses an auto dialer. TRAI’s 2026 amendment adds “Application-to-Person” calls, defined as calls started by an application “without direct human dialling”, and TRAI declined to exclude calls with a live agent. The full picture, with sources, is on the auto dialing rules in India page.
Power dialer for sales teams
An illustration with round numbers, not a customer result.
A two-wheeler dealership in Madurai follows up test-ride enquiries by phone, much as described on the CRM for car dealers page. Before power dialing, a sales executive looked up each number in a register, typed it, waited, and wrote the result in the margin. On a good day that meant about 40 calls, and the minutes lost to typing are the kind a telecaller productivity calculator adds up for a whole month.
With a power dialer on the phone, the executive starts one session on the day’s enquiries. The gap is set to 10 seconds, enough to finish the after-call sheet. Unanswered numbers come back at the end of the list once. The same executive now gets through about 90 numbers in the same hours, and each one carries a status and a remark the manager can read. How whole teams share these sessions is described on the CRM for telecallers page, and phone-based power dialers sold in India are compared on the best auto dialer app India page.
Power dialer limits
A power dialer is the wrong choice when:
- You run dozens of agents on headsets. A predictive dialer keeps large teams busier by dialling ahead of them, at the cost of some abandoned calls; the trade-off is laid out in power dialer vs predictive dialer.
- Every call needs research first. A preview dialer, or simply calling from the lead record, gives the caller time to read before dialling.
- You want to play recorded messages. That is a robo call, a different tool with its own rules, and it is not an IVR either; see IVR vs auto dialer.
- You call people who never asked. Dialling speed does not change TRAI’s rules on promotional calls.

Power dialer meaning FAQ
Which power dialer is the best for Indian sales teams?
The best power dialer for teams that call from mobile SIMs is one that runs on the phone itself, and Weo Dialer's auto dialer works as a power dialer. It calls a list one number after another, shows the lead's details while each call rings, and saves the outcome before moving on.
Is Weo Dialer a power dialer?
Weo Dialer is a power dialer and a calling CRM in one app. Its auto dialer places one call at a time from the phone's SIM, waits a gap you set, retries numbers that did not answer, and lets the caller skip, pause or stop from any screen.
Is a power dialer the same as an auto dialer?
A power dialer is one kind of auto dialer. Auto dialer is the umbrella term for any software that dials stored numbers; power, progressive, predictive and preview dialers are the different ways of doing it.
Does a power dialer play recorded messages?
No. A power dialer connects a live person on every call. Calls that play an artificial or pre-recorded voice without a person on the calling side are what TRAI's regulations call robo calls.
Is a power dialer free?
Most power dialers are paid per user. Weo Dialer's price is shared on WhatsApp; calls themselves go out on your existing SIM plan.
