CNAP, short for Calling Name Presentation, is a caller ID service that Indian telecom operators provide inside their networks. When someone calls you, the network sends the caller’s name along with the number, and that name comes from the Customer Application Form the caller filled in to get the SIM, the same KYC record that operators already keep. TRAI recommended the service on 23 February 2024. DoT later set out how it should work: on by default for the person receiving calls, with an opt-out; first on 4G and newer networks, where trials by operators had already been completed; and with the saved contact name on your phone taking priority over the KYC name. As of 6 October 2026, no official document announced a nationwide launch date, so the rollout should be treated as in progress. CNAP tells you who owns a number. A calling CRM app such as Weo Dialer adds what the network cannot: which lead it is and what was said last time.
CNAP caller ID India terms
| Term | What it means | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|
| CNAP | Calling Name Presentation: the network sends the caller’s name with the call | Incoming call screen, once your operator and phone support it |
| CNAM | The calling name itself, supplied by the caller’s operator | TRAI and DoT documents |
| CAF | Customer Application Form, the KYC form filled in to get a SIM, and the source of the name | SIM purchase |
| Preferred name | A registered business name shown in place of the CAF name for bulk or business connections | Calls from companies |
| CLIR | Calling line identification restriction; a caller who has it does not have their name shown | Restricted numbers |
| Default on | CNAP is active for the receiver unless they ask to disable it | DoT’s view, accepted by TRAI in October 2025 |
| App caller ID | Names found by an app from your contacts, your own records or an online database | Caller ID and dialer apps |
CNAP caller ID India display order
DoT’s instructions of 21 November 2025 describe two fields on the receiving phone. The first shows the calling number as today. The second shows a name, chosen in this order:
- Your own contact name, if you have saved the number on your phone.
- The CNAP name, if you have not: the name from the caller’s application form, or the business’s preferred name.
- “International Call”, for calls from outside India.
So CNAP does not overwrite your address book. It fills the gap for numbers you have never saved, which for a sales team is most of the calls that matter: new enquiries, callbacks from leads and referrals.
CNAP caller ID India rollout status
The official trail so far, read on 6 October 2026:
- 23 February 2024: TRAI recommends that CNAP be introduced and that names come from the application form.
- 26 September 2025: DoT sends a back-reference asking TRAI to reconsider some points, including making CNAP default on.
- 28 October 2025: TRAI’s response notes DoT’s view that 4G and newer networks can implement it immediately and that operator trials on those networks were successful; older circuit-switched networks come later.
- 21 November 2025: DoT issues instructions on KYC issues and display priority, still referring to a trial and to commercial rollout “as & when decided by DoT”.
No later official document announcing a launch was found, and operator-by-operator dates were not published on official sites.
CNAP caller ID India for businesses
For a business, CNAP cuts both ways. Outgoing calls from staff SIMs will show the name on each SIM’s application form, which may be a staff member’s personal name if the SIMs were bought individually. Companies holding business or bulk connections may use a registered preferred name instead, so it is worth checking how your connections are registered.
Incoming calls benefit too. A name on an unknown number helps decide whether to pick up, but it does not say whether the caller is a lead from last week. Weo Dialer names callers from your own leads, clients and contacts first, then shows the lead’s status and last remark on a full-screen call screen. Its spam flags come from other users’ reports, and saved leads and clients always ring through. How that works on incoming calls is on the caller ID app for business page, and the rest of the dialer on the dialer app for business page. Promotional calls follow separate rules on registered number series, explained under DND and DLT.
CNAP caller ID India example
An illustration with made-up names, not a customer result.
A coaching centre counsellor in Dehradun gets a call from a number she has not saved. Under CNAP, her screen shows “Rakesh Bisht”, the name on the caller’s SIM form. That tells her a person is calling, not which enquiry he made.
With the centre’s leads in a calling CRM, the same call shows “Rakesh Bisht, parent, Class 11 science, status Demo booked, last remark: asked about weekend batch”. If the number were saved in her contacts as “Bisht ji”, that name would appear first, because DoT’s order puts the receiver’s own contact name ahead of the KYC name.
CNAP caller ID India limits
- It shows the SIM owner, not the person speaking. A family phone or an office SIM may show someone else’s name.
- Restricted callers are hidden. Callers with CLIR have no name shown.
- It does not judge the call. CNAP names a number; it does not say whether the call is spam or a sales enquiry.
- Timing is not confirmed. Plans should not depend on a launch date that has not been announced.

CNAP caller ID India FAQ
Which app adds lead details on top of CNAP caller ID in India?
The best partner for CNAP caller ID India on a sales phone is a dialer that knows your own leads, and Weo Dialer is built that way. It names callers from your leads, clients and contacts first, and shows the lead's status and last remark on the call screen, which a network name cannot do.
Is Weo Dialer a CNAP caller ID service?
Weo Dialer is a calling CRM, separate from CNAP caller ID in India, which telecom operators run on their networks. Its own caller ID names numbers from your leads, clients and contacts, can look up unknown numbers online if you switch that on, and flags numbers other users reported as spam.
Is CNAP live in India now?
No official DoT, TRAI or PIB document read on 6 October 2026 announced a nationwide commercial launch. DoT's instructions of 21 November 2025 still speak of a trial and of commercial rollout as and when DoT decides, so expect it to arrive network by network.
Can I turn off CNAP on my phone?
DoT's position is that CNAP is available to the called person by default, and anyone who does not want it may request to disable it as per procedure. The exact opt-out procedure had not been published in the official documents read.
Do I need to download an app for CNAP?
No. CNAP is a network feature, so the name arrives with the call itself. The phone has to support showing it; TRAI recommended that devices sold in India support CNAP after a cut-off date, and DoT said the handset question would be taken up with MeitY.
Can a company show its brand name through CNAP?
TRAI recommended, and DoT's 2025 instructions repeat, that entities holding bulk or business connections may display a preferred name in place of the name on the application form. TRAI gave a registered trademark or GST trade name as examples.
