Types of leads in sales are labels that tell a seller how to treat each person on the list. The labels answer three separate questions. How ready is this person to buy? That gives cold, warm and hot leads. Who started the contact? That gives inbound leads, who came to you, and outbound leads, whom you approached. Has anyone checked them? That gives marketing qualified leads, who showed interest, and sales qualified leads, whom a salesperson has spoken to and confirmed. One lead carries an answer to each question at once: a website form filled yesterday is inbound, probably warm, and marketing qualified until someone calls. The point of the labels is order. A team with 300 leads and time for 120 calls should know which 120 to call first, and that is usually the hot and warm inbound ones. Weo Dialer, a calling CRM app, lets a team turn these labels into statuses and tags it can filter and dial.
Types of leads in sales at a glance
| Term | What it means | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|

| Hot lead | Ready to act soon: asked for a price, visit or payment | Calls where the next step is agreed |
| Inbound lead | Contacted you first | Website, WhatsApp, marketplace enquiries, incoming calls |
| Outbound lead | You contacted them first | Prospect lists, field visits |
| MQL | Marketing qualified lead: interest shown through marketing | Ad and form leads before any call |
| SQL | Sales qualified lead: need, budget and timing confirmed in conversation | After the first proper call |
| Lost lead | Did not buy, or was never reached | Win-back lists |
| Customer | Has paid | Clients list, renewal reminders |
Types of leads in sales by readiness
Cold, warm and hot is the scale most Indian sales teams use daily, because it maps to how a call should sound. A cold lead needs a reason to listen in the first ten seconds. A warm lead needs a reminder of what they asked about and one useful next step. A hot lead needs speed and no friction: the quote, the address, the payment link.
Leads move along the scale in both directions. A hot lead who goes quiet for three weeks is warm again; a cold number that asks for a brochure on WhatsApp has warmed up.
Types of leads in sales by origin
Inbound leads chose to contact you, through a form, a call, a WhatsApp message, IndiaMART or JustDial. They are usually warmer, and in India they also matter for the rules: TRAI’s 2026 amendment allows commercial calls based on a written or digital enquiry for seven days from that enquiry. Outbound leads came from your own prospecting. Calls to people who never asked are the area TRAI regulates most tightly; see auto dialing rules in India.
Where each lead came from is a separate field again, covered on the lead source meaning page.
Types of leads in sales by qualification
MQL and SQL come from larger companies where marketing and sales are different teams. Marketing hands over leads that look interested; sales confirms them on a call. In a small business the same person often does both, but the idea still helps: a lead is not “qualified” until someone has spoken to them and checked the need, the budget and the timing.
Types of leads in sales in a calling CRM
A calling CRM turns the labels into things you can filter and dial. In Weo Dialer:
- Readiness becomes your status pipeline. Create statuses such as Cold, Warm, Hot, Visit booked and Won, rename and recolour them, and drag them into order.
- Origin becomes a source tag, from Facebook, Google, Website, WhatsApp, Instagram, Referral, Walk-in, IndiaMART, JustDial or your own.
- Never-reached numbers become lost leads, collected automatically once they fail to connect past your chosen limit.
- Paying customers move to the Clients tab in one tap, with packages, paid and due amounts, and renewal reminders.
The shared lead filter combines all of these, so “Hot, from Website, due today” is one list, and the auto dialer can work through it.
Types of leads in sales example
An illustration with round numbers, not a customer result.
A modular kitchen showroom in Udaipur has 200 open leads at the start of the festive season. The owner sets four statuses (Cold, Warm, Hot, Booked) and tags sources.
On Monday the team filters Hot and calls those 25 first; six book. Next come 70 Warm leads, mostly referrals and Instagram enquiries, with reminders set for anyone who asks for time. The 105 Cold numbers, mostly an old exhibition list, wait for a slower week. The 30 numbers that never connected sit in the lost leads list for an evening session.
Types of leads in sales limits
- Labels go stale. A lead marked Hot in March is not hot in May; review statuses when you call.
- Different teams mean different things. Write down what Hot means for your business, in one line, so every caller uses it the same way.
- Labels do not create leads. A CRM organises the leads you have; finding new ones is marketing’s job.

Types of leads in sales FAQ
Which CRM helps sort the types of leads in sales on a phone?
The best way to keep the types of leads in sales visible on a phone is a CRM where every lead carries a status and a source you define, and Weo Dialer works that way. You name statuses such as Cold, Warm and Hot, filter by them, and dial one group at a time.
Does Weo Dialer sort the types of leads in sales?
Weo Dialer is a calling CRM that lets you label the types of leads in sales in your own words: a custom status pipeline for readiness, source tags for origin, a lost leads list for numbers never reached, and a separate Clients tab for people who paid. It manages leads; it does not generate them.
What is the difference between a hot lead and a warm lead?
A warm lead knows you and is interested but has not decided. A hot lead is ready to act soon: asking for a price, a visit or a payment link. The test is what they asked for on the last call.
What is an MQL and an SQL?
An MQL, marketing qualified lead, has shown enough interest through ads, forms or content to be worth a sales call. An SQL, sales qualified lead, has been spoken to and confirmed to have the need, the budget and the timing.
What is a lost lead?
A lead that did not buy, either because they said no or because they were never reached. Lost leads are worth a later win-back call, since circumstances change.
